What started out as a vision by neighbor Gary McEnery leading to one garden on W. 18th has grown into four community gardens in the area. Originally funded in part through a grant from the Erie School District and its former CHAMPS after school program and a donation of land from local business owner Larry Adiutori, the inspiring project has carried on and expanded thanks to the continued volunteer efforts of Gary and support of tax credit donations from Eriez Magnetics, Northwest Savings Bank, St. Vincent Health Services, Marquette Savings Bank, PNC, Erie Insurance and First Niagara Bank.
The places of growth, serenity, and beauty are now also found at 17th and Sassafras, 19th and Myrtle, and 18th and Walnut. The community awaits their new life each spring with many new lessons and fruits of labor in store, and works to winterize them after each harvest. The gardens are a tribute to the revitalization and restoration efforts in the area and especially to the toils and time of many dedicated neighbors and volunteers.
